U.S. Sensor's thin film platinum RTDs (Pt-RTD) consist of a passivated thin film platinum element deposited on a ceramic substrate. Thin film Pt-RTDs provide cost advantages when compared to wirewound platinum resistance temperature detectors. The construction of a thin film RTD sensor is not complicated. A thin layer of resistive material is first deposited on a ceramic substrate. A pattern is etched onto the sensor to create an electrical circuit which is trimmed to produce the desired resistance. Lead wires are then attached to the element and the whole assembly is coated with a thin layer of glass. A platinum type RTD, Pt-RTD exhibits a nearly linear temperature-resistance curve, as well as very high stability, repeatability, and accuracy over a very wide temperature range. This makes it especially suitable for applications in extreme temperature conditions. Typical U.S. Sensor Platinum RTD sensors operate as low as -50°C and as high as +500°C, though higher temperature ratings are available via special order. The thin film construction of our platinum RTD elements result in a smaller size compared to wire-wound RTDs. This gives them the advantage of having a fast response time, low thermal mass, high vibration resistance, high thermal shock resistance, and a small footprint. U.S. Sensor also offers a wide selection of RTD probe styles that are available in a variety of housing sizes and materials, including plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper. The precise, nearly linear temperature-resistance coefficient of U.S. Sensor resistance temperature detectors make them ideal in applications of extremely low and\/or high temperatures.
